I apologize I’ve been so out of it when it comes to posting the last two weeks, I completely broke my promise to start doing bi-weekly posts (update on Tuesday, outfit on Friday) but I promise its for a good reason!
Last week I went to the doctor on Wednesday, this is why my last entry was privated (though I only let one certain, special to me person read it), I couldn’t deal with it any more. 8 months of waking up achey and in pain, constantly waking up in my sleep, it just wasn’t worth it – it never had been but I finally had to admit to myself things weren’t working. Well long story short I’ve been out of it since then because I was put on Lyrica and my body is adjusting. Thankfully though the aches are gone, I can touch my legs again and it doesn’t hurt. I can walk upstairs again. Its all quite awesome and I’m quite happy about it – this tiredness can go to hell though.
And oh yes! I changed my hair! Expect another post this weekend with an update on that, the photo here is just a little preview!
I know this entry sucks but, its a little miniupdate!

As you can all see, my name is Hanna Marie. I’ve been a Style Guru here at CollegeFashionista since the winter of 2010/11 and I couldn’t be happier about being back for the summer term! I’ll still be located in Chicago all summer, despite it being break and what not, but look out for some random Florida style advice from your favorite (duh) transplant! Hopefully I can work some great Chicago-style street festival style in as well!

Me, Jose (another Guru over at CF), and Amy (our lovely editor and fouder) had a shoot on Wednesday for Ray-Ban’s newest line of sunglasses that’re being released via The Sunglass Hut, The Light Ray, they have inter-changeable lenses and are actually rather nice (though admittedly I’m really only a fan of Ray-Ban aviators because only the classic big wayfarers suit me and I can never find them!). I’m really excited about how all the photos came out! Amy shot me and Jose in them around the Art Institute and then I took a bunch of photos of Amy rockin’ them on these fantastic marble stairs downtown just south of the Bean.
The official post isn’t up yet, but the teaser post is! So head over here to College Fashionista to see whats been keeping me busy and off the internet this week!
PS. Not a ginger again! The retoning of my hair just came out a little darker than expected! Unfortunately now it has faded again to a gross dish-water brown/blonde/pinnk weird colour and I am quite in a pouty mood about it, I think its time to go back to silver blonde for me!

I know, I know. I keep saying I’m going to update more and get back on track with taking care of my blog beyond promoting my College Fashionista articles, but I’ve had a lot going on in my life, some of it great some of it not so great. I have a more narrow idea of what might becausing all of my health issues, none of the options are really that great but at least I’m closer to being diagnosed with something so I can start properly dealing with it and taking care of myself in the right way for whatever it might be. Thankfully I was put on some pain medication which is helping a lot to make me function better! (it helps with the aches and the headaches, which means less dizziness which is a god send!).
The weirdest thing going on in my life right now is my Dad… he’s leaving on Saturday to go over seas to do some work in the Middle East. Its an incredibly weird thought for me, my Dad being half way around the world. Its going to be good for him though. He’s had a rough time the last few years being a Gereral Contractor in this economy and this is putting him back in a place of constant work and almost back up to the financial bracket he was in before (which means less stress about how to pay for my schooling and medical bills, which takes a lot of guilt and stress off of me as well). I’m so proud of him for taking the opportunity and putting himself out there and taking this risk. Its going to be weird though that I can’t just call and talk to him if I want to, and this certainly cuts down my reasons to ever go back to Florida. I dunno, I’m a bit rambly on the subject because I don’t quite have my head wrapped around it yet! He’ll be in Afghanistan and I’ll be in London! How odd.
Delayed, but as promised, my book project! I wish I could post the book up here for you all to see because I’m really excited about how it came out and I’ll be ordering a copy so I can have one to possibly try and take this idea farther… I really, really would like to! I wanted to do something fashion and style based and I got a great idea from surfing the internet while I was writing my article for College Fashionista. Why not do a style dictionary! No, no, not like the other ones that are out there, I went a little farther in my idea than the conventional idea you’d like comes from that.
I formatted the book to be a two page spread for each photo. On the left page is a definition and on the right page is a photo. I wanted to take it a little further than just street style type of photos so that I could have a wider range of things to do with the definitions. I wanted the definitions to make the person who might read the book think about the photo. For example; create. This photo is of a girl in my 3D foundations class from when we were doing our cardboard chair project. She made a chair out of cardboard that was built for holding crafting supplies while you sat on it to craft! I’m really proud of how it came out for my first attempt at a photo book, and it is definitely an idea (like I said above) that I’d love to explore and really make into a publishable book.
I wish the pink had shown better in photos in my hair! It looked so brilliant at first but it faded rather quickly (of no surprise to me, my stylist even admitted she took it off too soon and we’d just lifted my hair back to platinum so it wasn’t in the best shape to hold a fun colour anyways). But, I’m going to call her later so I can hopefully get it toned again today or tomorrow since I have some fun and exciting photos to take for College Fashionista on Monday… stay tuned for more details about that! Its a pretty big thing and I’m shocked and honoured that Amy asked me to be included! Hopefully my health and the weather cooporate on Monday!
Summer is coming up and I’m pretty stoked for it, except for the little fact that I still haven’t finished that last Intermediate photo project, but I’m determined to do so this weekend so I’m not stressing about it all summer! (We’re suppose to have 2 quarters to finish ‘Incomplete’ classes but I’ll be in England so… I don’t know how that’d work!) As long as I get the shooting done this weekend after I fix my hair and print all next weekend I should be fine (since I have until June 10th or so in reality). After that, wow, I can’t believe its almost finals! Its a little ridiculous, these last two quarters have been so stressful that I’m beyond glad for summer. I am taking two classes, and while one is a stupid 101 Communications class I’ve been putting off, I’m actually really excited about my Sophomore Seminar that I’ll be taking, its on Middle Eastern Communities around the world and its making me no longer dread and want to keep putting off taking a Sophomore Seminar because… honestly most of the other topics are rather drab sounding.
Well I think that’s about it for right now! I’ve got so much to do today so I should be off! I hope everyone is lovely and enjoying being on summer break or not stressing too hard over impending graduations and finals!

I’m not happy at all with the way my prints came out for my last two photography projects. Only the Anna Wintour photo turned out as well as I’d hoped. The lighting for the Satine photos just didn’t present as well on film as on digital and my famous portrait film was ruined by some rather rude classmates so there was really very little I could do to fix it beyond just making it print able. I’m not very happy with a lot of the far back shots for my final on film either. If there was one thing I really needed to work on with my photography it is definitely being better at making the transition between film and digital. I’ve almost got it, I just feel like often I get to about 98% and never quite reach 100%. I’m really excited to be going back to digital next quarter for Advanced Photo, we have the option of doing film or digital (there is also ‘advanced digital photo’ but they elected to make the hybrid class the required advanced level class because some people, like me, elect to focus on film in school). I’m also stoked because I’m taking Professor Denlinger again and he is by far my favourite teacher I’ve had at DePaul.
I feel really great about the modeling I did for Stacy’s project though! Even though her large format film was also ruined by said rude other student it gave the photo of me as Edie Sedgewick a really interesting quality that kinda works and reminded us both of Andy Warhol’s films, of how rough they were.
I’m so ready for this quarter to be over so I can go back to having a life. Next quarter is going to be so relaxing comparatively to this one. It’s going to be ridiculous! And I mean that in the absolutely best way possible.
Speaking of which, I’ve been out of tea for almost two weeks and it’s killing me. We have a specialty tea store downtown called Tea Gschwendner and I can’t even lie about it… it is legitimately the best thing since sliced bread. They have the most amazing an interesting selection and the flavours are so dead on! Last time I got Baked Apple Pie, Marzipan, and just a plain Chai. I’m definitely getting the Marzipan and Indian Chai again but I want to pick a different fun flavour; I’m thinking something more floral since it’s spring and that was my special winter selection.
I just checked out two books for my March reading, a book on Queen Victoria and Prince Consort Albert that I’ve wanted to read for ages but was never not checked out called “We Two”. I also got a book on the Bielski brothers (the Belarussian Jews ‘Defiance’ is about) that tells their story and ISN’T the one the movie was based off of, I made sure to not just get ‘Defiance’ because I didn’t want the bias of having seen the movie before reading the book or anything like that. I’m really excited for my 5 days in Florida, I’m going to get to see so many people and it’s just going to be the perfect amount of relaxation, which is greatly needed in my life right now.
This is another terribly unexciting entry, but I promise come the end of this quarter things will get more regular and exciting around here!

This weekend was quite nice. I had off Saturday and Sunday (I’ll go more into that later) and I spent all day today shooting at school with my partner Stacy. We were working with both large format 4×5 cameras. I shot her as Crown Princess/Empress Victoria of Prussia/Germany for my 4×5 portrait and then I shot two ideas of her for my 35mm photos. One is suppose to represent a dramatically lit scene/photo from a movie and I chose this image of Satine from Moulin Rouge. The image at the left is one of the lighting test shots I did on my digital camera to make sure it was coming out the way I wanted it to. In the film shots her shirt is off the shoulders so that you can’t see it and you see a little less of the necklace. I’m pretty pleased with the way they came out seeing as I only had a budget of $15 to work with which meant I couldn’t afford to really do it up. I found these great clip on flowers for $5 for the pair and they made a nice substitute for the big things on the side of her headpiece, and I feel like ribbon works nicely. At the end of the day I could have splurged a little but I need to save all the money I can right now and I’m still pleased with the outcome either way. The fact that the lighting is pretty spot on and Stacy got the downcast questioning look matters a lot more to me for this project than the fact that she’s not covered in diamonds and pearls.
We’re currently working on two projects, technically at least. They’re both due at the same time. The first was the Famous Portrait and the second is called ‘Subject, Person…’. The Satine photo was my first of 2 photos that we’re suppose to shoot. For my second photo I chose the ‘cultural icon’ category with some ‘victim of the paparazzi’ thrown in for a few shots (of which I’m hoping to use for the print itself if they turn out nicely!). My subject for it was Anna Wintour. Stacy has the same hair cut as her and I had gotten this great vintage fur collared cape from my Mom last time I was in Florida so I though it’d work just perfect. I wish we had more chic looking sunglasses or even just bigger ones but I’m really excited about the way these came out! We spent like 15 minutes talking about her beforehand and I feel like she pulled off that stern always busy look very well in all of the photos. This was one of the only ones where she had a hint of a smile, but it’s probably my favourite regardless. I’m so excited to go in and develop the film on Tuesday! I can’t wait to start printing from these photos, I know I’m printing way more than the one required photo of each situation because I want to give Stacy at least one shot for being such a patient partner with all of the camera and light issues we’ve had!
I modeled for her as well. I played the part of Edie Sedgewick for her Famous Portrait, playing off of this photoshoot. I’m modeling for one of her Subject, Person… photos as well. On Tuesday we’re going to do a bit of outside shooting, I’m going to snap some more photos of her as Anna Wintour in the park and she’s going to snap some photos of me as Bonnie (of Bonnie and Clyde), another option was to photograph a real or fictional villain/hero. I’m really curious to see how her other photos turn out as well, she’s getting one of her guy friends to dress up as a mummy and play out the ending scene to one of her favourite horror movies (another one of the topic options was the dramatic conclusion to a movie, play, or book).
I’m enjoying taking photo classes more and more now that it’s starting to get more and more self-directed instead of having such strict boundaries like we did in beginning photography (which is a film class, I took it last Spring). I’m SO excited about my final if my professor approves it and I get enough people willing to model. I’ve wanted to do a modern take on Marie Antoinette for awhile (using stills from the Sophia Coppala movie as my starting ground for scenes). I need 2-3 girls and a guy to really pull it off the right way and I’m struggling to get enough people to agree. The whole idea is to have them dress kinda punkish and really modern-trendy but with the same style hair, as in lots of curls and high hair-do’s. I want to keep the make-up simple as well and very late 1700’s in France, which means a bit of blush on the cheeks and like pink lipsticks (maybe some reds depending on the skin tones of the girls I get to help me!). I’m really excited about hashing out this idea and making it a reality, it’s been an idea of mine for awhile! I’m going to do a lot of digital shots as well so I can have them ready to edit for possible portfolio work.
It’s been crazy at SPACE and it won’t end for awhile, we have so many shows coming up! We have two weeks of double shows as well. I was lucky enough to land this weekend off since I filled in for one of the other interns on Wednesday and Thursday because she was sick. I’ll write more about the craziness when the two weeks of constant shows are over! This entry is long enough anyways.
PS. Chicagoans! If anyone is interested in being a part of my final photo project for the quarter please get in contact with me! I’d really appreciate anyone willing to model.

So I did end up cutting my bangs back straight. I had a little bit of an issue though. I was cutting them and I sneezed and ended up slicing my nose open. This is why they look a bit wonky. After I sliced my nose open I was much too freaked out to finishing cutting them, thankfully I was most of the way done and am only missing a small amount of cutting on the right side of my face and some cleaning up in the middle. The fact that I was using a razor also resulted in them being a bit shorter than I would have liked, but I don’t think the shortness ended up being a bad thing! Just a new take on my regular old straight bangs. What I’ve taken out of this is… I need to invest in sheers and while I’ve layered my hair with a razor before, I will never attempt to do bangs with one again, ever, I just feel lucky I didn’t really do some damage to my nose or need stitches or have to go to the hospital.
Pardon how exhausted and tired I look in that photo. I hadn’t had a proper more than a few hours of rest or sleep in like 15 days at that point, and it’s definitely showing on my face here.
It was really nice to finally have a proper day off today. I normally plan it so I have either Saturday or Sunday off and Monday as a homework day (as well as the day I do my CollegeFashionista article). Today was spent sleeping in, walking Pickles (one of several nicknames Rupert will answer to), cleaning up my living room, and watching Inception.
I wasn’t very impressed with Inception but I wouldn’t complain about watching it again. I just have a very neutral opinion on it. I didn’t watch it by choice though, and that could have effected it. I had to watch it and then write up answers for 4 questions in response to it for my Film Philosophy class.
I also finally cleaned up a bit, I haven’t had the energy or the time to really properly clean my apartment since I started school since I’ve been so busy (not to mention dizzy). It’s so nice to have the pile of coats and sweaters off of my kitchen table and properly hung back up in the living room again. I also finally cleaned my bathroom, the floors were in dire need of scrubbing, so much that I assure you I don’t mind using up precious time of my only real day off in much too long to do so. Tomorrow I’m hoping to finish cleaning up once I finish my article and my homework. Tomorrow also means back to being busy! I have a load of homework I probably should have started on today (at least I did my Film Philosophy stuff!) but I know I’ll have time tomorrow and I felt I had deserved the relaxation much too much.
On top of Intro to PR and French homework I have to go to the Study Abroad department again because I’m still having issues with it not saving or submitting a lot of my information! I’m completely done with my application but I can’t submit it because nothing is saving! Very frustrating I assure you. At least it’s a distraction from figuring out where the hell I’m going to get $7,600 from.
Working at SPACE can be a little frustrating, but I know that’s just because I’m in a constant battle of needing to work on being more patient with people. I explained something 3 times to another intern and they still did it wrong (and they just kept standing around… doing nothing instead of ya know, taking a little initiative?) but that’s part of working in any industry, really it’s just part of being an adult and I really need to work on it. I need to be more patient or I know it’s not going to do me any good in the future when I actually am getting paid to work and need to keep a job for more than 3-6 months.
I have inserted the photo of vodka here just because it fit no where else and I thought it would be a little funny to insert it when talking about being a responsible adult, you know totally breaking down those typical college kid barriers, which I definitely feel like I do. I don’t serial date, I’m not out getting schwasted and fucking around on school and taking my drinking more seriously than my homework. I know way too many people who haven’t lived up to the potential I know they have because they just don’t care enough to actually apply themselves, and it’s really sad. I avoid this situation at all costs, but in return at least with myself I probably try and do too much at once. Actually, I know I try and do too much at once, and right now my body and health are paying for it. My fingers are crossed that it will be worth it in the end.
Anyways, back on topic. I had to write an on-the-fly article for CollegeFashionista this week because me and Amy agreed that the backgrounds of my last article and this one were too similar. Instead I took another new photo and will be writing my typical new article next week and the article I had originally written to go up tomorrow (or I suppose today by the time I finish writing this entry seeing as it’s 11:57) will be ‘submitted’ on the 7th to go live the 14th. It actually worked out for the best since my flight from Florida next weekend doesn’t land until 11am and I would have sort of been beyond pushed for time and running around like a chicken without it’s head trying to figure out where I was going to get an article from. Now I won’t have to worry about writing the article within like 4 hours of time after I’m back or writing it before I leave since I’ll already have it done. The new article going up definitely isn’t as good, but it’s still not disappointing! Just very… snowy?
Now that I have straight bangs back I’m itching to get back to having platinum hair… having the ombre was a nice change for a 2-3 months but come mid/late-February when I get my hair done next, I think I’m going to make my way back to platinum. I just feel like if I’m going to be blonde, I need to go all out. This nice little break for it has restored my passion for the platinum! I was going to go red come June/July but now that all hinges on if I go to England or not. I may actually keep this ombre until I know whether or not I’m going overseas or not. I love it but honestly half of the point was to darken my hair a little to give it a better base to go red in case I was going overseas, so when I was over in England I wouldn’t have to worry so much or spend money on getting my hair done so often (I can tone my own hair if it’s red, and I really only need my roots done once every 2.5/3 months instead of every 4-6 weeks when I’m platinum). So in all likelihood I’ll keep the ombre until mid-March when I hopefully get an answer about study abroad (cross your fingers for me everyone, please, there aren’t words strong enough to describe how badly I want to get accepted and go…)
Wow, this entry has gone on much longer than I originally anticipated for it to go on. I think it’s the relaxed feeling of the day and having been able to sleep in rubbing off on me. Now it’s actually legitimately almost February and it’s still blowing my mind how fast this year has gone. Is everyone keeping up with their resolutions? I didn’t make any this year because I never keep them, but I haven’t even started in on most of my goals yet and it’s frustrating! I’ve only started on the one to get accepted into Study Abroad haha. Hope everyone had a lovely week!
